How are weight-loss injections different from herbal medicine?

Key points in 30 seconds

  1. Weight-loss injections are drugs whose effects have been confirmed in large clinical trials.
  2. Herbal medicine does not have evidence that strong.
  3. That said, people with weak digestion or low energy may find the injections hard to tolerate.
  4. Weight-loss injections need a prescription and are not something a Korean medicine clinic handles.
  5. Either way, if the way you eat and move doesn't change, the weight comes back.

What we often hear

  • "I can't decide between injections and herbal medicine."
  • "People around me talk about the injections a lot."
  • "What's the difference between the two?"

How are weight-loss injections different from herbal medicine?

They work in different places, and the strength of the evidence is different. Weight-loss injections are drugs that mimic hormones that regulate appetite, and their effects have been confirmed in large clinical trials.

There's a reason we state this plainly first. It would not be honest to downplay the evidence for another treatment in order to recommend ours. The evidence for weight-loss injections is stronger than for herbal medicine. That is a fact.

Then why use herbal medicine?

Because not everyone can use the injections, and there are things injections alone don't solve. This applies to people with weak digestion or low energy.

Digestive discomfort is common with weight-loss injections: nausea, indigestion, and constipation. People who already have weak digestion may find this hard to bear and stop partway through.

Also, weight-loss injections are prescription drugs. They are not something a Korean medicine clinic can prescribe. If that's the option you want, the right thing is for us to guide you to see a doctor for it.

How strong is the evidence for herbal medicine?

There is research on herbal medicine for weight loss, but there aren't many trials as large and well designed as those for weight-loss injections. We want to be clear that the strength of the evidence is different.

We have not checked the literature ourselves to cite in this column. So here we don't write "there is evidence." We only write that "the strength of the evidence is different."

Which one should I choose?

If reducing your weight substantially is urgent, you'd do better to get a consultation about weight-loss injections. If you also have digestion or energy problems, that is where we can help.

We don't see it only as a matter of choosing one or the other. Whichever you use, if the way you eat and how much you move don't change, the weight comes back. Neither one can do that part for you.

What are the limits of this assessment?

We are not the ones who prescribe weight-loss injections, so decisions about that drug belong to the doctor who prescribes it. What we've written here is just what's useful to know when you make your choice.

One more note. There are cases where weight-loss injections must not be used and cases that need caution. Getting them on your own and using them is dangerous. They must be prescribed through a proper medical visit.

We don't tell you which of the two is better. They work in different places, so you need to choose the one that fits your body's current condition.

If you're torn between injections and herbal medicine, just ask us. We'll first tell you what you need to know before you choose.

Which method is right differs from person to person depending on their condition and situation.

I mainly see problems that start with body alignment and posture. I'm in charge of care that requires looking at the balance of the whole body, such as children's growth, weight loss and recovery after car accidents. I have published meta-analyses on fatigue in international journals. That research experience helps when I see patients whose fatigue doesn't go away no matter how much they rest.
