When you're young but can't raise your arm above your shoulder
At first the shoulder was just a little stiff, but at some point the arm stopped going above shoulder height. Many come in only after they've had to bend their head down to wash their hair because the arm won't go up, and putting on or taking off clothes hurts.
When shoulder pain at night keeps you from turning over
They can more or less put up with it during the day, but at night it throbs so much that even turning over is hard. Of the people who come to us for the first time with shoulder problems, this night pain is the most common reason.
When everything you eat leaves you bloated and you feel nauseous in the morning
Whatever they eat, they feel bloated, and especially about thirty minutes after waking up, a wave of nausea comes over them. As a result, they eat less, and soon they don't even feel like thinking about food. Not eating makes them weak, and being weak makes the stomach worse — a loop forms.
When your child often has stomachaches and goes to the bathroom a lot
If there's blood in the stool, the pain wakes your child at night, they're losing weight, or a fever keeps going, see a pediatrician first. When there are none of these signs, tests haven't found anything in particular, and it keeps happening, there's something we can look at.
When it's fine only while you take medicine, and the burning soon comes back
They're comfortable while taking the medicine, but the burning returns soon after they stop. A prickly throat and frequent burping after meals come with it. Many say this happens even though they don't lie down right after eating.
When stomach discomfort comes with headaches and fatigue
They feel nauseous every time they eat, and in the afternoon a pain rises from the temples and spreads to the back of the head. They say they slept enough, yet they're already worn out in the morning. Some come in for the stomach; others come for headaches, and the stomach comes up when we ask.
When you've taken stomach medicine for years but still feel something stuck in your throat
They've taken stomach medicine for a long time, and the heartburn has eased — but the feeling of something stuck in the throat and a dry cough are still there. Many also mention a feeling of something constantly running down the back of the throat.
When your jaw hurts and your sleep and stomach are off too
They come in for jaw pain, but when we ask, they also sleep lightly and their stomach feels bloated. They think they're dealing with three separate problems. In fact, many are getting treatment for each one at a different place. But when we look at them all together, they're sometimes connected.
When we decide to use a jaw appliance, and when we don't
When hands-on treatment alone can't hold the jaw in place. We don't recommend it from the start. If after several sessions of acupuncture and hands-on treatment the improvement only lasts that day and keeps coming back, that's when we discuss it.
What do we measure when your face looks uneven from side to side?
They say their face looks lopsided in every photo. When we ask more, they always chew on the same side, and the jaw on that side feels stiff. People don't come in just about appearance. Usually there's pain or discomfort when chewing as well.
When your mouth won't open well and something seems to catch
If your mouth is stuck open and won't close, your jaw may be dislocated, and you need care right away. Don't try to force it back into place. On the other hand, if one day your mouth suddenly locks so that you can't fit even two fingers in, don't put that off either.
What do we look at when several clinics couldn't find the cause?
They've had headaches and neck pain for years, but scans of the head and neck only came back with "nothing abnormal." Medication helps for a while, then it flares up again, over and over — and many come to us feeling this is their last try.
